This guitar is in fairly good condition considering its age, with some visible cosmetic wear and some repaired cracks. The neck joint is in very good condition with a proper neck angle and the frets still have lots of life left. There are 4 repaired cracks in the top and one on the back, the repairs were done a long time ago and look to be holding well. The tuners are original and working well. With this guitar being a Hawaiian conversion the nut has been changed from the original extra tall one to a standard bone nut, the saddle also looks to have been replaced at some point with the new one also being made of bone. A vintage case is included and while we can't tell for sure if it's original it is era correct.
The information below was found using the 1939 Gibson catalog as well as the Fabulous Flat Top book.
Released in 1937 as the least expensive Hawaiian guitar in the Gibson lineup, the HG-00 was identical in many to it's normal 6 string counterpart the L-00 with the main differences being the typical Hawaiian guitar specs of a higher nut for slide playing, 12 frets to the body instead of 14 and the soundhole, bridge and bracing set farther back. The HG-00 also had a through saddle bridge instead of the standard saddle styl.e These guitars were braced heavier than the standard acoustics to account for the higher string tension on the guitar when tuned to standard Hawaiian pitch.
The HG-00 featured a Spruce top, Mahogany back & sides and a Mahogany neck with a Rosewood fingerboard. Other features include pearl fret markers, soundhole purfling, ivoroid binding on back & sides and in inlaid brown celluloid pickguard. The nut is 1 7/8" and the scale length is 24 3/4".
According to the Fabulous Flat Top book, Gibson historian Julius Bellson estimates that only around 300 HG-00 guitars were made.
